As the importance of Africa grows, global interest in the continent is also steadily increasing. The European Union outlined the basis for a new strategy with Africa in the spring, while Finland is currently putting the finishing touches on a related strategic plan of its own. Why is Africa such a hot topic right now? What are the key developments when a continent and its countries are seeking wellbeing, equality and new beginnings? What kind of an impact do a young population, environmental change and educational issues, among other factors, have on the development of Africa?

Discussing the topic are Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, Professor of Sociology Elina Oinas, Professor of International Forest Policy Maria Brockhaus and Researcher Gutu Olana Wayessa. Additionally, pre-recorded addresses will be heard from EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen and Professor Madara Ogot, Deputy Vice Chancellor from the University of Nairobi.
